District Priorities
|
Fiscal year 2000, one of the requirements for receiving state appropriations was to develop a Resource Assessment of the District. In order to accomplish this, the District developed a list of "Key Stakeholders" throughout the District and asked for their assistance in the development of the resource assessment. In April 2001, the District sent letters to local stakeholders seeking input into the development of the District's long-range plan. A questionnaire was included asking the following questions:- What are the three most critical resource management issues confronting the people of Charlevoix County, and what do you feel the District's role should be in addressing those issues?
- In what ways might the District collaborate with you to better serve our mutual clientele?
- List, and share if possible, copies of resouce inventories, studies and other documents which would be useful to the District Board in establishing future priorities.
- Any other suggestions as to how the District can better serve the people and natural resources of Charlevoix County?
Responses submitted indentified the following issues:
- Uncontrolled development
- Development pressure on marginal lands (wetlands, highly erodible, high water table)
- Increase in impervious surfaces
- Farmland & open space preservation
- Water Quality
- Land fragmentation
- Forestland fragmentation
As a result of this scanning process, the District adopted the following priorities:
#1 - WATER QUALITY
#2 - NATURAL RESOURCE MANAGEMENT
#3 - EDUCATION
#4 - FARMLAND & OPEN SPACE PRESERVATION
