Located on the corner of North and East streets in Boyne City, the property was formerly a Michigan Department of Natural Resources Field Office. The DNR Office closed due to employee retirement and sat vacant for many years. The buildings were used for storage by Young State Park, and as a residence for racoons and numerous pests.
The Charlevoix Conservation District Office was previously located in the Water Street Mall. In April 2000 we began searching for a more appropriate and permament office location. A phone call to inquire about 'renting' the old DNR Field Office turned out to be a stroke of fate. That's when we learned that the DNR was planning on selling the property and buildings, and through special legislation, could sell it to the Conservation District (another unit of state government) for $1.00.
We got to work right away, putting a plan together and soliciting legislative support. Senator Walter North, and Representative Andy Neumann both offered their assistance in support of the District proposal. Many months later, on January 5, 2001, Senate Bill No. 1365 was signed by Governor Engler making it official. The property now belongs to the Charlevoix Conservation District.
OFFICE HOURS The office is normally open Monday through Friday. Saturday appointments are available upon request. Please note, our work takes us out of the office at times, so it's best to call first. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.
