In Case Of An Emergency, Dial 9 1 1 Chandler Township has an excellent relationship with it's neighbor, Melrose Township. Chandler Township contracts its fire protection from them. The distance from the station in Walloon Lake caused the citizens of Chandler Township to build their own fire station in 1989. Station 2 of the Melrose Fire Department is located on the corner of Chandler Hill Road and Walton Road. Local residents in Chandler Township are trained in firefighting and medical first response. They respond with members from Melrose Station 1 to incidents in either Melrose or Chandler Townships. Melrose Fire Department has membership in both Emmett County Fire Association and Charlevoix County Chief's Association. Melrose Fire Department has working mutual aid agreements with its neighboring townships and cities in both counties. Providing a vast supply of equipment and manpower when a need arises. Melrose Fire Department holds a regular meeting on the first Thursday of every month at 7:00 P.M.. Odd months at Station 1 in Walloon Lake, and even months at Station 2 in Chandler. Drill night is the third Thursday of the month at 7:00 P.M., location to be announced in the pager. Melrose Fire Department has a web page, where a monthly newsletter is published to keep members advised of events and schedules regarding the fire department. It was determined that if Melrose Fire Department was to protect the residents of Chandler Township, there needed to be a second fire station added. Vert Viles, Fire Chief, persuaded the Melrose Township Board that this was necessary. The Chandler Township Board also believed in the idea, but all the financial support and passing of resolutions does not start a fire station. A call for membership went out, and ten residents of Chandler became the first members of the Chandler Station 2, established in 1989.
