2003 Tree Farm Scholarship
|
The Michigan Tree Farm Committee has awarded its Natural Resource Scholarship for 2003. First Place Winner is Scott Richard Murray, a senior at East Jordan High School, who was chosen from applicants statewide to receive a $1000.00 scholarship. The school will receive a wooden plaque for their support of the program with Scott's name. Funds for 1st place were provided by The Weyerhaeuser Company Foundation of Tacoma, Washington, with support from the Grayling Structurewood plant. The plaque was funded by the Michigan Forest Foundation.
Scott was selected for his project on the school forest, a certified Tree Farm. The project involved making and placing signs in strategic locations in the school forest, which has several properties within five miles of the school. Serving to educate the students and the community, he hopes the signs will raise the level of awareness of the school forests.
Scott will be attending Muskegon Community College in the fall. He plans to become an elementary school teacher and become a member of a school advisory group to help carry out activities in school forests.
The goal of the Michigan Tree Farm Scholarship is to encourage educational use and proper management of school forests and to increase student awareness and understanding of natural resources and forest management. Scholarship projects will also help in using the school forests for science and environmental education.
CONGRATULATIONS, SCOTT!!!
The Michigan Tree Farm Scholarship Program is sponsored by the Michigan Tree Farm Committee, Weyerhaeuser Company Foundation, Michigan Forest Association, Louisiana-Pacific Corporation of Alpena, Timber Products of Munising, and MeadWestvaco Corporation of Escanaba.
