The Charlevoix Conservation District, in cooperation with the U.S.D.A. Plant Materials Center in East Lansing, established a demonstration plot at the District Office to promote the use of and increase the awareness of native grass species. Southlow Michigan Germplasm Little Bluestem, Southlow Michigan Germplasm Indian Grass, Southlow Michigan Germplasm Switchgrass, and Southlow Michigan Germplasm Big Bluestem were planted. Interest in planting native grass species has increased dramatically in our area, in part due to the Wildlife Habitat Incentive Program (WHIP). The Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) provides technical & financial assistance to landowners and others to develop upland, wetland, riparian, and aquatic habitat areas on their property. Pictures are as follows: 1)newly planted plot; 2) Little Bluestem; 3)Indian Grass; 4) Switchgrass; 5) Big Bluestem. The Big Bluestem seems to be doing the best. Just before I snapped the picture, a cotton-tail rabbit scurried out (I had no idea it was in there)! To learn more about WHIP contact Bill Borgeld, USDA-NRCS at 231.347.5255.
