Melrose Township operates under the general law township form of government. The township's legislative body is a five member elected board of trustees consisting of a Supervisor, Clerk, Treasurer, and two Trustees.

On April 11, 2006 the Melrose Township Board of Trustees adopted the following rezone ordinances:
1. Ordinance #1 of 2006 to rezone approximately 12 acres of Township owned land at 4449 State Street from CR Forest Conservation to C-2 Highway Commercial (Tax ID# 15-010-009-041-00).
2. Ordinance #2 of 2006 to rezone approximately 40 acres of vacant property at the north end of Fourth Street from Agriculture to RR Rural Residential Conservation Design (Tax ID# 15-010-008-015-00)
