PUT YOUR PILLS IN THE POD
CHARLEVOIX COUNTY DRUG COLLECTION EVENT ON SEPTEMBER 6TH
To help citizens properly dispose of unwanted or expired medicines, there is an upcoming POD (Prescription and Over-the-Counter Drug Drop-Off) collection event in Boyne City. This collection event will take place at the Boyne City Road Commission Garage, just east of Boyne City Public School football field, on Saturday, September 6, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m..
Improper disposal of unwanted and expired medicine can pose a significant danger to our Northern Michigan’s waters, community, and families. Put Your Pills in the POD! The best solution is to dispose of old and expired medications through Northern Michigan’s Prescription and Over-the-Counter Drug Drop-off (POD) Program.
This is an environmentally safe, convenient, and free way to dispose of unwanted and expired pills. Properly disposing of unused medicines at POD collection events reduces the risk that prescriptions will be mishandled and end up on the street, prevents avoidable poisoning of both children and adults, and prevents contamination of water resources.
Residents are encouraged to bring prescription medicines and over-the-counter pharmaceuticals to any of the POD collection events. We request that residents keep the medicines in the original container for easy identification of the medicine but erase or black out all personal information from the prescription bottles. The POD events are unique in the area in that they accept all prescription drugs, including those classified as controlled substances. Pills, liquids, ointments, lotions, and even pet medications are all accepted at the events.
The service is being organized and paid for by a group of leading local institutions united in their concern about the public health, public safety, and environmental effects of holding on to, flushing, or landfilling unwanted drugs. Group members include: Charlevoix County Conservation District, Charlevoix County Road Commission, Boyne City Police Department, Tip of the Mitt Watershed Council, Health Department of Northwest Michigan, Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians, and Harbor Area Regional Board of Resources (HARBOR), Inc.
In addition to collection events, residents may also dispose of pharmaceuticals at permanent POD Drop Boxes located at law enforcement agencies throughout Northern Michigan. For the locations of the POD Boxes, visit www.PillsInThePOD.com.
