Water Resources Protection - Floodplains
|
SUMMARY Part 31 of the NREPA, “Water Resources Protection,” (MCL 324.3101-3133) includes provisions for the prevention of harmful interference with the discharge and stage characteristics of streams in order to protect the floodplains, stream beds and channels at various times and circumstances. DEQ program staff in the Flood Hazard Management Program review proposals to occupy, fill, or grade lands within the state’s floodplains. These activities are regulated by a permit system intended to ensure that the channels and floodways are kept clear and uninhabited and that structures placed outside the floodway are properly protected from flood damage.
