What We Do:
The Register of Deeds is the official recording office for all legal instruments pertaining to the transfer and encumbrances of properties in each county. Examples of these documents include warranty deeds, quit claim deeds, tax and sheriff deeds, mortgages, assignments and discharges of mortgages, leases, liens (state, federal, mechanics, etc), surveys, probate orders, plats, and master deeds.
Lending institutions, title companies, insurance companies, realtors, attorneys, credit bureaus, and the general public, utilize our records on a daily basis. Documents that meet Michigan statute are received by our office, time stamped, given a liber and page number, scanned and indexed. This process makes the documents available to the public and insures that they can be easily retrieved, while also preserving this important information.
Our computer image index dates back to January 1984 and you are able to access these documents on our web site. We are currently working on scanning and indexing all documents prior to this date for access at Charlevoix County Register of Deeds online services.
Our office does not prepare documents nor are we able to help you in preparing your own documents. We suggest that you consult an attorney or a title company to assist you.
Documents may be hand delivered or sent in to the office for recording. Appropriate fees and self addressed, stamped envelopes must accompany the documents. Checks should be made payable to the Register of Deeds for the correct amount. Please check each document thoroughly to make sure they meet Michigan statute for recording.
