In 2010, the Charlevoix County Sheriff's Office initiated a garden where we grow and use the produce to feed the inmates here at the Charlevoix County Jail. The Sheriff’s Office invested $500.00 towards buying and planting starter plants such as potatoes, tomatoes, broccoli, cucumbers, peppers, beans, and cabbage. The vegetables that weren’t used immediately were prepared and frozen to be used at a later time.
The garden is maintained by the Jail Trusties/Inmates who weed, water, and tend to the plants daily.
HEALTH BENEFITS & SAVINGS
The Charlevoix County Jail garden saved the County approximately $26,099.00 overall and provided 13,851 lbs. of fresh and healthy food for our inmates in 2015.
